How To Prepare for the New Year

For many, the beginning of a new year is a great time to start anew, to set new goals and to replenish our energy to continue pursuing ongoing ones. Just like we prepare to receive the new year with champagne and fireworks, we can also prepare to start the year off right. There are many things we can do to make our visions clearer and our thoughts more organized as the new year begins. Below are a few of the things you can do to make sure you get off to a great start in 2019!

Clean your home

The thing about cleaning your home–especially an extensive sort of cleaning–is that it’s A LOT of work. But once it’s done, seeing everything look neat and feel fresh is incomparable. You home’s whole energy changes and with it so does your inner energy. You feel lighter, healthier even, and invigorated. Apart from all the other benefits of having a clean home, the effect it has on your mood is reason enough to want to have a clean home at the start of the year. You’ll feel motivated and ready to take on whatever 2019 decides to throw your way!

Reflect on the past year/Make a list of goals

It helps to take a moment to actively think of what the past year has brought to you and what you’ve accomplished. Make an account of how far you’ve come. See where you stand, think realistically about what you want to achieve and how far you have left to go. Break goals down into steps and set some deadlines for yourself.  If you’re someone who journals, this is a great activity to try in your journal.

Take steps into following a healthier lifestyle

To accomplish all the things we want to accomplish we’re going to need a lot of energy. The best way to obtain that energy is by following a healthy lifestyle. Do an overview of your life and the places in which you improve your overall health. Maybe you need to eat better or start including some exercise in your daily routine. Maybe what you need is to make more time for yourself–whether that be to meditate or just to enjoy time away from the hectic world. Once you start taking care of your mind and your body you’ll be ready to start pursuing all your goals!

Start a gratitude journal

Starting a gratitude journal is a great practice in mindfulness and a great way to start the new year. In a notebook (any notebook, it can be as fancy or as average as you want) write down one thing you’re thankful for that day. If you’re up to the challenge, write 3 things you’re thankful for. You can write as many or as few as you want, as long as you put something down every day. The idea is that by writing down what you’re grateful for you’ll train your mind to find the good in every day.  Somedays it’ll be easy to think of something and somedays it’ll be harder. It’s especially important on those more difficult days to sit down and try to think of something. In time you’ll see that your perspective on life starts changing to a more positive and happy one.

Perform a ritual to gain closure of the past year

Rituals are a great way to find that concrete closure that sometimes evades our analytical brains. Performing a physical action of closure can help our brains process the information that something in our lives is over and done. Rituals are often symbolic. So you can dispose of a sweater you often wore to the job you got fired from. Or you can write a letter to someone who hurt you and then burn it. It can be as simple as making a journal entry about the things about 2018 that you wish to leave in 2018. The ritual can be anything you want it to be as long as you have the intent to leave these negative thoughts and feelings behind.

Love yourself

The single most important place to start when you want to achieve anything in life is to love yourself. Whether your goal is to get the job of your dreams, to find love, to finish school, to go back to school, to learn to cook–the most important thing you need to achieve first is self-love. Everything you set out to do in life will be much easier if you’re walking around with a self with which you’re happy. If you’re looking for a place to start, then loving yourself, doing things to take care of yourself, giving yourself the space to be the awesome person you are, is that place. Once you’re there you’ll find there are no limits to what you can achieve.

The new year is always a great time to start new projects and set new goals, but life does tend to get in the way sometimes. So just remember that anytime is a great time to start pursuing your dreams and your goals. As long as you keep going, no matter the pace, if you work hard for it, there’s nothing that can stop you.
